By the time responding units arrived at the scene, they found Deputy Mitchell shot in the head, with his own service weapon. Evidence showed he fought desperately for his life before the fatal blow. The Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies across California launched an immediate and expansive search involving hundreds of officers, but the person responsible has never been found.
