Episode Summary
Aquatech Waterproofing https://aquatechwaterproofing.ca/This episode of The Next Biz Thing looks at Aquatech Waterproofing, a Toronto basement waterproofing and foundation repair specialist that has served Ontario homeowners since 1996. Markus J. Diplama explores how the company earned a five star rating across more than seven hundred reviews by diagnosing honestly and recommending the cheaper fix when it is the right one, and why a twenty five year transferable warranty changes what a repair is actually worth. The episode also looks at why basement water is becoming a predictable problem across aging housing stock. Listen in, then go and see what they do.What if the single most important part of a house was the part almost nobody ever thinks about, right up until the moment it fails?Welcome back to The Next Biz Thing. I am Markus J. Diplama, and every episode I go looking for the companies that are quietly doing something exceptional in their own corner of the world. Some weeks that corner is a laboratory. Some weeks it is a design studio or a factory floor. Today it is about two metres below ground level, in the cool, dim space underneath a family home in Ontario, Canada.Because here is the thing about basements. Nobody buys a house for the basement. Nobody photographs it for the listing. It is storage, it is the furnace, it is where the kids eventually claim a corner for a games console. And then one spring morning after the thaw, or one evening after a storm that dropped more water in three hours than the city drains were ever designed to carry, a homeowner walks down those stairs and steps into a centimetre of water. And suddenly the least glamorous part of the house is the only part that matters. The company I want to tell you about today has spent almost thirty years standing between Ontario homeowners and that morning. They are called Aquatech Waterproofing, and they are based in Toronto. They started in 1996. That is worth sitting with for a second, because 1996 is a long time ago in any trade, but it is a particularly long time in this one. Waterproofing is a field where the shortcuts are invisible. You can seal a crack badly and the homeowner will not know for two winters. You can skip a step in an exterior excavation and the backfill will hide it forever. Which means the only real test of a waterproofing company is time, and Aquatech has been taking that test, in public, in the same city, for more than twenty five years. Along the way they have worked with tens of thousands of Ontario households. What they do covers the full range of the problem. On the inside of a home, that means interior waterproofing systems, weeping tile, French drains, sump pump installation, and battery backup pumps for the nights when the power goes out at exactly the wrong moment. On the outside, it means full exterior excavation and membrane work, foundation repair, and crack injection. Then there is everything around the edges of the category that homeowners discover they need once they start digging into it: backwater valves, window wells, egress windows, drain cleaning and repair, concrete floors, and basement lowering and underpinning for people who want to turn that damp storage space into an actual room worth having. That last one interests me, because it tells you something about how the company thinks. Waterproofing is usually sold as protection. It is framed as insurance, as a defensive expense, as money you spend to stop something bad. But underpinning is the opposite. It is a company saying: now that your basement is dry, let us make it taller, brighter and genuinely liveable, and add real square footage to your home. That is an offensive move, not a defensive one, and it reframes the whole relationship. What genuinely sets Aquatech apart, though, is something simpler and much harder to copy, and it comes down to what th
