In 1992, Kent McGowen was working as a deputy with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas.
According to McGowen’s account, he was involved in an operation targeting a gang suspected of trafficking weapons outside Houston. As part of the investigation, he reportedly provided money to a confidential informant, commonly known as a CI, to purchase a firearm. Is This Ex-Deputy a Killer? The operation took an unexpected turn when the informant and another individual were arrested.
The mother of one of the people involved, reportedly arrived at the scene. McGowen claims she appeared to be under the influence of intoxicating substances, was slurring her words and became increasingly confrontational.
He also alleges that she threatened him before the encounter ended.
At that point, however, no one could have predicted that their paths would cross again, or that their next encounter would end with her dead and McGowen eventually convicted of murder.
The Night of the Fatal Shooting
A warrant was later issued for her residence.
McGowen says he and a small group of officers were instructed to execute it. The deputies reportedly knocked repeatedly while she called 911 from inside the home.
During the call, she allegedly told the dispatcher that police officers were outside her door and that she needed protection from them. She also claimed to have a personal history with McGowen, an assertion that would later become central to the public narr
