Context: In today’s reading we move through Genesis 24-27, some of the most important chapters in the early story of God’s people. We see Abraham’s servant searching for a wife for Isaac, the birth of Jacob and Esau, and the unfolding of God’s long awaited covenant plan. These chapters lay the foundation for the rest of the Old Testament and what will ultimately point to Jesus. Welcome to day 43 of the Lifespring One Year Bible Rewind. Today we read Genesis 24, 25, 26, and 27. This sweep of Scripture carries us from Abraham’s final years into Isaac’s household and the next generation. The narrative is rich, full of God’s promises, human decisions, surprising choices, and the reminder that God always keeps His covenant. Genesis 24 Abraham sends his oldest and most trusted servant on a mission to find a wife for Isaac. The servant prays for specific guidance, and God answers precisely. Rebekah’s appearance, her kindness to both the servant and the camels, and the providential timing all show us that God directs the steps of those who seek Him. Genesis 25 We see Abraham remarry, give gifts to his other sons, and then pass his full inheritance to Isaac. We also read the birth of Esau and Jacob, two sons whose conflict will shape the next several chapters. God tells Rebekah before the boys are born that the older will serve the younger. The seed of tension is planted early. Genesis 26 Famine strikes, and Isaac settles in Gerar where he repeats his father Abraham’s mistake by calling Rebekah his sister. Even so, God renews the covenant and blesses Isaac abundantly. The conflict over wells shows how God protects Isaac’s household even when enemy pressure rises. Genesis 27 The blessing scene is dramatic, emotional, and heavy. Jacob, coached by Rebekah, deceives Isaac and receives the blessing intended for Esau. Esau’s cry is heartbreaking and leads to a bitter division. The family is shaken, but God’s plan continues forward. These chapters remind us that God often works through imperfect people to accomplish perfect purposes. Commentary In the commentary portion of the episode we look at a surprising question from Malachi: why did God love Jacob and reject Esau? The answer becomes clearer when we see Esau’s disregard for the birthright, his choices in marriage, and his character as described later in Scripture. Jacob is not spotless either.
