Episode Summary
Moving Co. https://movingco.caThis episode looks at Moving Co., a residential and commercial moving company based in downtown Toronto and serving the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario and Quebec. Markus explores why the company owning its own trucks and employing its own crews, rather than brokering the work out, changes what it can honestly promise a customer. The conversation covers one dedicated crew per move, upfront pricing with no hidden fees, full insurance with certificates provided, packing, storage, junk removal and office relocations, and a record of more than ten thousand completed moves. Listen in for a clear look at what accountability really means in a service business.Think about the most stressful days in an ordinary life. Not the dramatic ones, the ordinary ones. The day you start a new job. The day a baby arrives. The day you finally deal with the thing you have been putting off for a year. And somewhere near the very top of that list, for almost everybody, sits the day you move house. It is strange, when you think about it, that something so universal, something most of us go through several times over a lifetime, still carries a reputation for going badly. Today I want to talk about a company that looked at that reputation and decided it was not inevitable.Welcome back to The Next Biz Thing. I am Markus J. Diplama, and this is the show where I go looking for businesses that are quietly doing something better than the industry around them expects. Not the giants, not the household names, but the operators who have found a detail everyone else treats as unfixable, and fixed it. Today that takes us to downtown Toronto, and to a company called Moving Co.Moving Co. is a residential and commercial moving company based on Fort York Boulevard in downtown Toronto. They serve the Greater Toronto Area, they run routes right across Ontario, and they cross the provincial line into Quebec as well. Add up the communities they cover and it comes to more than fifty, from Barrie up the highway to Ottawa, out west to Mississauga and Hamilton and London. Their line is simple: your move, our priority, every detail handled with care. And the more I looked at how they actually operate, the more I realised that sentence is not marketing copy. It is a description of the business model. Here is something most people do not learn about the moving industry until it has already gone wrong for them. A great many of the companies you find online are not moving companies at all. They are brokers. You book with one name, you agree a price with one person, and then on the morning of the move a truck arrives with a different name on the side, crewed by people who have never spoken to whoever sold you the job. If something gets damaged, or the crew turns up late, or the price moves, you find yourself standing between two companies who each have a good reason to point at the other. Moving Co. is explicit that this is not what they are. They own the trucks, they employ the crews, and the company you booked is the company that shows up at your door. That one structural choice is the root of nearly everything else they promise, because accountability is very easy to advertise and very hard to actually deliver once the work has been handed to a stranger. You see it most clearly in how they staff a job. One dedicated crew handles your move from the first box to the last. The people who wrapped your dining table in the morning are the people carrying it up the stairs at the other end in the afternoon. That sounds like a small operational detail. In practice it changes the entire texture of the day. A crew that has already seen the inside of your old place knows which items you hesitated over. They know the mirror is the fragile one, and that the box marked kitchen is heavier than it looks. Handovers are where information goes missing, and moving is an industry built almost ent
