Johnson is a former CIA intelligence analyst and deputy director in the State Department’s Office of Counterterrorism who left government service in 1993 to found BERG Associates, a private international security consulting firm. A co-founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), he gained prominence in the early 2000s as a media commentator on terrorism and intelligence issues.
