Patrick joined me from America for a wide-ranging Sunday chat on what I called the optimism and pessimism controllers: why societies seem to emerge from major conflict with energy, confidence and grand ambition, only to slide back into fear, cynicism and managed decline. We began with a seasonal detour into colds, elderberry, vitamin C, zinc and old-fashioned remedies, before moving into architecture, films, cities, war, propaganda and that constant modern push towards doom. Along the way I reflected on everything from California and Manhattan to Moscow, from Kubrick and The Wizard of Oz to truth movements that seem permanently addicted to catastrophe. My own conclusion remains the same: pessimism is being weaponised, and one of the few sane responses left is to keep your humour and refuse to be demoralised. The conversation turned deeply personal when I shared some of my mother’s wartime experiences: brutal factory discipline, air raids, doodlebugs, straffing and the way ordinary people were treated as expendable. From there Patrick and I explored conscription, militarisation, NATO procurement, the corruption of institutions, abortion, cultural decline and the way governments use division to keep people powerless. Donald Jeffries later joined us from the US and brought his own sharp take on corruption, policing, prisons, race, media manipulation and the collapse of any real standard in public life. For all the bleak material, the thread running through the whole programme was clear: if the system feeds on fear, division and despair, then truth, solidarity and a bloody good laugh are acts of resistance.I Protest by Donald Jeffries: https://donaldjeffries.substack.com/Thomas Sowell Official Website: https://www.tsowell.com/Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell: https://sowell.org/books/black-rednecks-and-white-liberalsHerbs Hands Healing: https://shop.herbs-hands-healing.co.uk/Jill Davies Blog: https://shop.herbs-hands-healing.co.uk/blogDr. Schulze’s American Botanical Pharmacy: https://www.herbdoc.com/School of Natural Healing Online: https://online.snh.cc/index.htmlInnocence Project: https://innocenceproject.org/The Chieftains Official Website: https://www.thechieftains.com/Queen Mary 2 by Cunard: https://www.cunard.com/en-gb/cruise-ships/queen-mary-2
