Verse of the Day: 1 Samuel 17:47
Episode Summary
Today’s Lifespring! One Year Bible Rewind reveals a major shift for Israel. King Saul’s leadership is failing. Because of this, God sends Samuel to Bethlehem. There, we find a powerful truth. Humans often focus on outward appearance. However, God searches the heart. This journey from the pasture to the battlefield shows that the battle belongs to the Lord.
Today’s reading is 1 Samuel 16–20.
Episode Summary
The story begins with the quiet anointing of David. Soon, he rises to national fame by defeating Goliath. We then see a deep bond form between David and Jonathan. Their covenant stands in sharp contrast to Saul’s jealousy. Although Saul tries to kill him, David acts wisely. Consequently, the Lord protects him through the loyalty of others.

Why this episode matters: These chapters define the character of a “man after God’s own heart.” We learn that God prizes internal character over status. Furthermore, true courage grows in private moments before it reaches the public stage.
Commentary Highlights
In 1 Samuel 17, a strange detail stands out. Saul fails to recognize David. Even though David was his musician, the king is confused. This shows Saul’s poor spiritual state. He was no longer in his own mind because he rejected God. Therefore, this story warns us that distance from God leads to a loss of perspective.
We also look at Goliath’s height. Some versions say he was seven feet tall. However, traditional measures suggest he was over nine feet tall. Regardless of the inches, the size did not matter to David. His confidence stayed rooted in God. Specifically, he remembered how God saved him from the lion and the bear.
Verse of the Day
1 Samuel 17:47 — “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”

January 20th — Resilience and Renewal
In 825, the monks of Iona chose to die rather than give up sacred relics. Their courage eventually led their Viking attackers to find faith. Later, in 1156, Bishop Henry of Finland died on a frozen lake while spreading the gospel. Finally, in 1897, Mel Trotter found grace at the Pacific Garden Mission. He went from the edge of suicide to founding 60 rescue missions.

National DJ Day
Today is National DJ Day. This day reminds me of my time at KQLH from 1979 to 1982. Back then, we used razor blades to edit tape. I see this as a metaphor for how God edits us. He cuts away what is unneeded to build something beautiful.
